Grip Sport in San Diego
Grip sport is one of the most specialized disciplines within strength athletics. While many strength athletes understand the importance of grip strength, grip sport takes that concept further by turning hand strength into a competitive event.
San Diego has a growing community of athletes interested in developing elite grip strength, and Gegns Gym provides one of the few environments in the region where athletes can train with the implements used in grip sport competition.
Grip sport focuses on testing the strength and endurance of the hands, fingers, wrists, and forearms. Competitions feature a variety of lifts that challenge different aspects of grip ability.
Common grip sport events include:
• Axle Bar Deadlift
• Rolling Handle Deadlift
• Pinch Grip Lifts
• Hub Lifts
• Vertical Bar Lifts
• Thick Bar Variations
Each event places unique demands on the hands and forearms, forcing athletes to develop not only raw strength but also the ability to control awkward and unstable implements.
Grip sport athletes often come from a wide range of strength backgrounds. Many are strongman competitors, powerlifters, armwrestlers, or general strength athletes who recognize that grip strength can be a limiting factor in many lifts.
Developing a stronger grip can improve performance in movements such as:
• Deadlifts
• Farmers Carries
• Atlas Stone Loads
• Pull-ups
• Rows
• Strongman Events
For many athletes, grip sport training becomes a way to push hand strength beyond what traditional training methods can provide.
At Gegns Gym, athletes have access to specialized grip training tools designed specifically for developing elite hand strength. Training alongside other strength athletes also creates an environment where grip development is taken seriously and consistently challenged.
Grip sport rewards patience, dedication, and attention to detail. Progress often comes from consistent training and gradual improvements in hand strength and control.

What Our Athletes Say
Grinder Gym is the Mecca of the fitness scene in San Diego. Dave, the owner, is one of the most humble and genuine guys you’ll meet.
Cool place.
So much equipment. There is really just so much equipment.
Came out to see my brother who goes here and he invited me to work out with him. Really chill — Dave and Andrew were welcoming.
Love this place.
I have had a few bad experiences with fitness classes and gym trainers in recent years. This gym is very nice, clean in my experience, and the trainers are very nice.
